Girona
Discover Girona
Girona, the most beautiful medieval city in northern Spain. The city is known for its historical monuments and buildings, as well as its rich culture.
Girona has a history of 2000 years, having been besieged multiple times by Napoleon, yet it remains beautiful. The population protects their history by not renewing anything. As a result, the historical monuments and buildings are spectacular. The old center of Girona exudes a medieval atmosphere, with its narrow streets and steps of the Jewish quarter, the city wall, and the famous Girona Cathedral.
Muralles de Girona
The wall, also known as 'Muralles de Girona', is one of the most visited attractions. The wall was built in the 1st century BC by the Romans to defend against enemies and foreign invasions. The wall has been expanded a total of 4 times, making it now 1 kilometer long. What makes the wall so special is that it has endured two setbacks: the collapse during the French siege and the collapse in the 19th century to expand the city. With such a history attached to a wall, it makes it even more beautiful. Today, the wall is considered a cultural asset and attracts many tourists every year.
La Catedral de Santa Maria
The famous Girona Cathedral is also frequently visited by both the population of Girona and tourists. Previously, a Moorish mosque stood on this site, but with the disappearance of the Moors, the mosque was converted into 'La Catedral de Santa Maria' in the 11th century. The Girona Cathedral is the second highest point in the city, making it stand out in the skyline.
The city of Girona
Besides the historical monuments and buildings, the city itself is picturesque. The city is crossed by two rivers, the Ter and the Onyar. Due to the Onyar river, it looks as if the colorful houses are hanging, funny, right?
Maybe you are not entirely into history, but you love shopping, then Girona is also the right place for you. There is not only a shopping street, but there are also shopping malls (handy for when the weather is not so good).
If you are staying at Van der Valk Hotel Barcarola, you can also easily fly via Girona. The city has a beautiful and well-organized airport, perfect for returning home completely rested.
